Rollout of FOGO recycling to complete this summer

Published 17 January 2024
This February, we are completing the rollout of food and garden organics recycling (FOGO) to apartments and unit blocks. This will increase the amount of organic waste we recycle into compost, resulting in less waste to landfill and a reduced impact on the environment.

From Monday 19 February, we will deliver one or more FOGO bins to apartments and unit blocks that receive a Wednesday or Friday waste collection. This new service will then begin collection in the week commencing 4 March. Those receiving a new bin will get a letter and brochure in February explaining what can and can’t be accepted in FOGO recycling.

Free kitchen caddies to use with your FOGO bin

Our free kitchen caddies are designed to make it easier to collect food waste in your kitchen before disposing of it in a FOGO bin. When delivering new bins, we will also deliver kitchen caddies to low rise apartment blocks (those with four to 12 units). Most medium to high rise buildings have access restrictions. This is why we can’t deliver caddies to these premises.

Residents living in larger apartments and unit blocks can either:

  • request a bulk delivery of FOGO caddies and liners be delivered to their building – via their owners corporation or building manager, or
  • collect a free kitchen caddy and roll of compostable caddy liners from any of our five library branches: Albert Park, Emerald Hill, Middle Park, Port Melbourne and St Kilda. Free kitchen caddies are also available for residents who use our communal hubs.

FOGO recycling in Port Phillip

In 2023, we delivered kerbside FOGO bins to eligible houses and townhouses and then to a portion of eligible apartments and units. The delivery of FOGO bins to apartments and unit blocks this summer will complete the rollout of kerbside FOGO recycling in our City.

We encourage residents who do not receive a Council waste collection to use our communal glass and FOGO hubs. There are now 76 dual service FOGO and recycling hubs and a further four sites that are FOGO only. Any resident can use the hubs.
