BBQs on fire ban days

Find out about BBQ use in our public parks, reserves and beaches. As well as requirements on total fire ban days.

Can I use my BBQ on a Total Fire Ban day?

All barbeques which use solid fuel such as wood, charcoal or briquettes are banned. This includes closed oven or kettle-type appliances.

Electric barbeques provided in public reserves may be used providing:

  • the barbeque is electric or gas fired (note all Port Phillip barbeques in parks are ELECTRIC)
  • the barbeque is a fixed permanent structure
  • the area for three metres around and above the barbeque is completely cleared of flammable material
  • an adult is in attendance at all times
  • a hose connected to a reticulated water supply or vessel containing at least 10 litres of water is on hand.

Can I use my BBQ on the beach?

We don't support the use of portable gas BBQs or charcoal burners on the beach in the City of Port Phillip.

We encourage you to instead use the existing free public BBQs found in the public reserves along the grass area of the foreshore.

Fires and coal fire pits are not permitted on the beach.

Using BBQs in our public reserves or parks

To find your nearest public BBQ visit the Meat in a Park website or refer to our Parks & Playgrounds list. Our City has approximately 19 reserves with BBQ facilities available. All BBQs in the City of Port Phillip are free to use. To report a malfunctioning BBQ please call Park Services on 03 9209 6647.

Portable gas and electric barbecues may be used provided:

  • the barbecue is located within 20 metres of a permanent dwelling (mobile homes, caravans or tents are not classified as permanent dwellings)
  • the area for 3 metres around and above the barbeque is completely cleared of flammable material
  • an adult is in attendance at all times
  • a hose connected to a reticulated water supply or vessel containing at least 10 litres of water is on hand.
  • a drip tray or vessel is used to catch falling debris from BBQ, fats or liquids are disposed of appropriately.
