Obtaining adjoining owners' details for Protection Works Notices

If you're doing building work that might affect your neighbour’s property, you need to notify them.

Protection Works Notice

If you are required to carry out protection work, you must give notice to the adjoining owner.

The notice will include:

  • what building work you plan to do
  • how long the work will take
  • how you'll make sure your neighbour's property stays safe and doesn’t get damaged.

Your building surveyor will decide which neighbours should be contacted. If you don’t know who your neighbours are, then you can apply to get their details.

How to apply

To submit your application online:

  1. Register or log in to My Port Phillip
  2. On the home screen, look for the "Apply for something" menu and choose "Apply for a permit or application"
  3. Select Certificates
  4. Choose Adjoining Owners Details from the list
  5. Enter the property address where the works are taking place
  6. Complete the application form
  7. Lodge
  8. Confirmation - Accept terms and conditions of use
  9. Summary - Attach a copy of the Form 6 Determination
  10. Payment - Securely pay by credit card.

Form 6 Determination

As part of this application, we require a completed Form 6 Determination from the relevant building surveyor that clearly identifies each adjoining property address.

For this application, each lot, unit, apartment or suite is considered a separate property. For apartment buildings that have been subdivided, the address must include the lot, unit, apartment, or suite number, in addition to the street address.

For example:

If adjoining owners’ details are required the four units at 123 Example Street, Melbourne. The Form 6 should detail each unit:

  • Unit 1/123 Example Street, Melbourne
  • Unit 2/123 Example Street, Melbourne
  • Unit 3/123 Example Street, Melbourne
  • Unit 4/123 Example Street, Melbourne

We are unable to provide adjoining owners’ details for each unit if the Form 6 only lists the building’s street address.

If you don't provide these details, it may result in partial information being provided or your application being cancelled.
