Walk and Wheel
What is Walk and Wheel?
Healthy habits start young. Investing in active school travel is an essential part of encouraging our community to get out and walk, ride and wheel.
Walk and Wheel is a collection of programs developed by Council in partnership with local schools to:
- Encourage students and their families to walk, ride or wheel to school.
- Work with school communities to identify and address safety issues that make active travel more difficult or less safe.
Together, we're making it easier, safer and more enjoyable for young people to choose active travel.

Why Walk and Wheel?
We want a healthier, more connected community where walking and bike riding are safe, convenient and accessible choices for everyone. Walking and wheeling support this vision by improving:
- sustainability
- health outcomes for young people
- road safety
- community connection and social interaction.
Programs
Council offers a range of programs under the Walk and Wheel banner to support safer and more active travel for young people.
- Healthy Tracks to School focuses on improving infrastructure in and around schools.
- Ride2School Day and Walk and Wheel Month encourage students to walk, ride or wheel to school more often.
- Bike Ed helps young people develop the skills and confidence to ride safely.
We also provide grants and funding opportunities to help schools and school communities deliver their own walking and wheeling initiatives.

Walk and Wheel Reports
In 2025, we partnered with 9 schools to deliver programs that encourage young people to get around by walking, riding and scooting.
Council trialled a new initiative, Winter Ride2School Day, with St Kilda Park Primary School and Elwood Primary School to get students moving in the colder months.
