What is car share?

Car share is a cost-effective alternative to owning a car, giving you 24/7 access to a vehicle as you need. Registration, maintenance, insurance and fuel are covered by membership, and you only pay for the time and distance that you travel.

Car share vehicles provide residents and businesses access to affordable and flexible transport, while freeing up parking and helping to reduce carbon emissions. A range of vehicles are available and can be rented for the hour or by the day, on demand.

Using car share is easy:

  • Join a local car share provider
  • Book a vehicle by app, online or by phone
  • Unlock the vehicle as instructed by the provider
  • When finished, return the vehicle to its allocated bay.

About car share in our City

Car share is a great way to have access to a car without the cost of needing to buy and maintain your own. By creating a network of car share vehicles across Port Phillip, we will reduce traffic and parking pressures on our streets, which benefits everyone.

Car share is aligned with our Move, Connect, Live: Integrated Transport Strategy 2018-2028. This strategy guides Council's vision to create a connected and liveable City where there are a range of travel choices that are convenient, safe and accessible.

More than 240 car share vehicles are available across Port Phillip through three approved providers. Vehicles can be found in designated parking bays across the city and returned to these locations once your booking is completed. Benefits of car share

International and local research consistently shows that increasing the availability of car share decreases demand for private car ownership. Every additional car share bay is estimated to take between 7-10 private vehicles off the road. People who use car share also reduce their trips by car by 15-50%, making more trips by public transport, walking and bike riding.
