New Year’s went off without a hitch and now we’re looking towards what comes next.

Many people flocked to our foreshore over the New Year’s period to celebrate shoreside, once again proving why St Kilda is Victoria’s most visited beach.

The whole event was a success, with celebrations in our public spaces remaining family-friendly.

We want to say a big thank you to everyone who rang in the New Year responsibly by following local bans and restrictions. By playing your part, you helped to ensure celebrations stayed safe, clean and fun for everyone.

This success was underpinned by a huge multi-agency effort carried out with our many partners including Victoria Police, Liquor Licensing, Ambulance Victoria, Parks Victoria, Yarra Trams, VicRoads, Public Transport Victoria and Lifesaving Victoria.

Our Council Officers were also out in force assisting Victoria Police in maintaining the peace and enforcing local restrictions, including the citywide New Year’s alcohol ban.

With the 26 January public holiday quickly approaching, it’s important that we all continue to play our part for a safe and successful summer.

A citywide alcohol ban will be in effect from 8 pm 25 January to 12 midday 27 January. During this time, unsealed containers of alcohol will not be permitted in any public areas. All other alcohol bans will continue to apply during this time too.

Anyone wanting to have an alcoholic beverage can still do so at licensed venues or on private property.

With summer expected to heat up and El Nino weather patterns being forecast; we’re planning for a burst of revellers to make their way to Port Phillip for the Australia Day long weekend.

Police and Local Law Officers will once again be out in force patrolling, and we ask everyone to keep up the great work in continuing to comply with local restrictions following the success of New Year’s.

We also encourage everyone to take steps to beat the heat and stay sun-safe this summer too.
