St Kilda West Foreshore improvement works

The project will provide an accessible connection from the foreshore to the West Beach boardwalk. Follow this page for updates on the project.

Location

West Beach, St Kilda

Cost

This project is a Local Roads and Community Infrastructure (LRCI) partially funded (Phase 3) through an agreement.

Milestones

Why are we doing this?

West Beach Boardwalk Accessibility Connection is one of the sub projects included in the Public Space Accessibility Improvement Program and will provide accessibility for those who use wheelchairs, prams or other mobility aids by linking to the foreshore promenade.

This program allows Council to address some of the actions stated in the City of Port Phillip Access Plan by undertaking the foreshore improvement works and work towards meeting accessibility standards.

The impact

The foreshore area will be closed during construction.

Objectives

The provision of DDA assets will mean all members of our community can access and enjoy the boardwalk and foreshore plantings.

Outcomes

The Construction works will provide a Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) compliant connection from the foreshore paths to the West Beach boardwalk. The existing boardwalk is already DDA compliant, but the connections are not accessible for those who use wheelchairs, prams or other mobility aids.

Proposed construction works include:

  • New DDA compliant ramp and boardwalk connection from Pier Road to the existing West Beach boardwalk and additional recycled plastic seating
  • Upgraded staircase and handrails to meet current standards and concrete pavement
  • Construction of new concrete balustrade to match existing feature
  • Planting new native vegetation garden beds
  • Installation of new post and rail fence along the Pier Road.
