Bank Street tree plots, South Melbourne

We're creating up to 15 new tree plots on Banks Street between Kings Way and Wells Street. This will increase the canopy cover, providing more shade in the street.

Location

Bank Street, South Melbourne (Kings Way to Wells St)

Cost

Budget $134,000

Milestones

Why are we doing this?

Background

In 2021, we received community feedback about a lack of short-term parking spaces and limited tree coverage in the area. In response, we added 30 parking spaces by converting the 60 degree angle parking bays to 90 degree angle bays. We also positioned the new parking spaces to allow for street tree planting.

We're now planting trees in these plots as part of our commitment to create a greener, cooler more liveable City. Information on Council’s Greening Port Phillip Strategy is available at: Greening Port Phillip: An Urban Forest Approach - City of Port Phillip.

The impact

Canopy cover: up to 15 new trees to be planted on Bank St. Each tree may provide up to 40 metres squared canopy cover by 2044.

Improved biodiversity: 15 new flowering gums will provide habitat opportunities for local fauna

Increased permeability – each tree plot will create up to nine metres squared of permeable surface along the street, reducing stormwater run-off and assisting with passive irrigation of the new trees.

We expect that there will be some temporary impacts on the road and parking. We will update this page and nearby residents and traders when we have more information on this.

Objectives

We're using existing gaps in the parking on Bank Street to provide a second stand of trees in-road to improve canopy cover over this wide street.
