A lively new George Lane

Let us introduce you to the newly refurbished George Lane, including a brand-new street mural entitled QUEEN.

George Lane is brimming with public art and historical significance but was in need of works to improve safety, amenity and vibrancy of the laneway. Between October and November, we implemented a range of upgrades, including:

    • installing fencing to limit access to the unsafe slope
    • installing new planter beds and lighting
    • resurfacing the rear of the lane and commissioning a local artist to paint a street mural.

We believe that these upgrades will not only improve the safety of the lane but reduce illegal dumping and anti-social behaviour. The addition of new lighting, greenery and art is also expected to liven-up and bring vibrancy to the space.

The mural: meet the new QUEEN of George Lane

Local artist Betty Sargeant was commissioned to paint the new street mural entitled QUEEN, which was inspired by the music of G-Flip. The mural features a visualisation of a soundwave that represents the shape of G-Flip’s vocals from their hit song of the same name.

The single jagged line runs the length of George Lane, taking advantage of the site’s elongated shape and is set in front of a coloured geometric background which reflects the dynamic range of the song’s instrumentals.

The style of the artwork is bright and minimalist and is meant to showcase elements of contemporary local music and queer pride. This has been designed to mirror the qualities encompassed by local non-binary musician, Victorian Pride Centre ambassador and mural muse - G-Flip.

The piece was also commissioned to celebrate the local live music scene and the announcement of the new St Kilda Live Music Precinct. Check out Live N Local for more information about the Live Music Precinct and what it means for the future of live music in St Kilda and surrounds.

    Live in the lane

We supported the iconic George Lane venue to host a free event on Thursday November 16 2023, to launch the newly refurbished laneway.

The event featured an awe-inspiring live performance from Brooke Taylor and DELSINKI.
