Asbestos
What is asbestos?
Asbestos is a group of fibrous silicate minerals that occur naturally in the environment. Asbestos was commonly used in construction materials between the 1940s and 1980s because of its durability, fire resistance and insulating properties.
Health risks associated with asbestos
Generally, the existence of asbestos in a home does not pose a health risk unless asbestos is:
- broken
- in a damaged or deteriorated condition
- disturbed, producing dust that contains asbestos fibres.
Asbestos can cause health problems and lung disease when fibres become airborne and are inhaled. This is usually associated with inhalation over an extended time frame. Because the level of exposure that may cause health concerns is unknown, exposure to asbestos fibres or dust must be kept as low as possible.
Do I have asbestos?
Before you start any building work, it’s essential that you call a professional to check if you have asbestos. An Occupational Hygienist can provide advice.
You can find an asbestos analyst by visiting the National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) website or calling 1800 621 666.
What to do if I have asbestos?
It is not recommended that you handle, remove, or dispose of asbestos yourself. It is easier, safer and often cheaper to get a professional to do the job for you. They will usually include the cost of disposing of the asbestos waste legally at an approved facility with the cost of removal.
Please visit the Victorian Governments Asbestos website for more information on identification and removal.
What are we doing?
The City of Port Phillip has developed an Asbestos Risk Management Plan in response to asbestos found in our community.
