Supporting Women in Sailing at Port Melbourne Yacht Club

PYMC is a long‑established community sailing club where participation, safety and shared responsibility are part of everyday club life. Like many community clubs, PMYC has been reflecting on how different members experience the sport, and what helps people feel comfortable, confident and included on the water.
Women and girls make up a growing part of the PMYC community however, the Club recognises that confidence and progression opportunities can sometimes affect participation, particularly in a sport shaped by weather, experience and self‑belief. For some women, stepping into leadership roles on the water can feel like a significant step beyond attending training or race days.
In response, PMYC has introduced initiatives such as Women in Sailing Days and women‑led racing opportunities. These sessions are designed to give women the chance to helm and crew and to build confidence and connection. Although these activities are sometimes limited by the weather, they have created valuable opportunities for women to build skills, experience and confidence on the water.
Women involved have spoken about feeling more confident in their sailing and more connected to the Club. Newer members are also able to see women leading on the water, helping to broaden ideas about what sailing leadership can look like.
“These initiatives are about creating the right environment for people to build confidence at their own pace. It’s been great to see more women stepping forward and feeling comfortable taking the lead.”
- Carley Wright, Committee Member and sailor
PMYC is helping ensure that women and girls are not only welcomed at the club, but are also seen, heard and trusted as capable sailors and leaders.
This work is supported by PMYC’s existing policies around respect, safety and inclusion, alongside a strong volunteer culture where members look out for one another. Together, these foundations allow fair access initiatives to develop in ways that feel practical, genuine and suited to the club.
Looking ahead, PMYC is open to continuing this work by strengthening confidence pathways for women sailors and sharing the many ways people can get involved in sailing locally.
