Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

• When will I receive an invitation to my ceremony?

  The Department of Home Affairs will assign you a ceremony based on when you were approved and will email you an invitation about 3 to 4 weeks before the ceremony. 

  Please don’t contact the council, as we don’t handle the ceremony bookings or invitations.

  Citizenship application numbers and waiting times for ceremonies are on the Home Affairs website

• What do I need to bring to my ceremony?

  Bring your letter of invitation and photo ID. Recipients aged 16 years or older must bring photographic identification.

• Can I bring family and friends?

  You can invite up to three family and friends to the ceremony.

  You will not be able to sit with your guests during the ceremony.

• What should I wear?

  Smart casual or your traditional clothing.

• What do I do if I am unable to attend my ceremony?

  The Department of Home Affairs advises that only exceptional circumstances should prevent you from attending your scheduled ceremony. Please follow the instructions on your invitation if you cannot attend. 

  If you do not attend a ceremony within 12 months of your approval, The Department of Home Affairs may cancel your approval if you cannot provide an acceptable reason as outlined in citizenship legislation or policy, supported by satisfactory evidence.

• Can I do my ceremony in another council area?

  Unfortunately no. People applying for Australian citizenship are given a ceremony at a council based on where they live. You cannot choose where and when to attend your ceremony.

• Applying for an Australian Passport

  After making the pledge, you can apply for an Australian passport. Wait at least 10 days before you apply online with the Australian Passport Office. This is how long it might take for your citizenship details to be recorded in the system.
