Milestones

Why are we doing this?

Netball is a growing sport in Port Phillip and participation is expected to continue increasing over the coming years. Existing facilities are heavily used, and additional infrastructure is needed to support future demand, particularly for women and girls.

The Port Melbourne Netball Infrastructure Project will help address this need by delivering dedicated netball infrastructure in an established sporting precinct. The project supports Council's commitment to improving access to local sport and recreation opportunities and delivering more inclusive facilities for the community.

Following extensive investigations, Council endorsed JL Murphy Reserve as the preferred location for the project. Community engagement, technical investigations and an independent review found that JL Murphy Reserve provides a viable location to progress the project to the next stage of design.

The impact

The project is currently in the planning and design phase and there are no impacts to reserve users at this time.

If the project proceeds to construction, parts of JL Murphy Reserve will be temporarily unavailable while works are undertaken. Impacts may include temporary changes to access, construction activity and fencing around work areas.

Council will provide advance notice of any future impacts and work closely with user groups and the community to minimise disruption wherever possible.

Objectives

The project aims to deliver:

  • Four outdoor netball courts.
  • Sports lighting to support training and competition.
  • A new pavilion to support netball and broader community use.
  • Seating and spectator areas.
  • Accessible pathways and connections.
  • Bicycle parking, drinking fountains and supporting infrastructure.
  • Landscaping and site improvements.

The pavilion will be designed primarily to support netball activities, while also providing opportunities for broader sporting club and community use.

The project will contribute to JL Murphy Reserve's role as a multi-use sporting precinct, bringing netball together with existing sporting facilities and supporting more efficient use of community infrastructure.

The project will also support participation opportunities for women and girls, improve access to local sporting facilities and provide benefits for future generations as the Fishermans Bend area continues to grow.

In July 2026, Council endorsed JL Murphy Reserve as the preferred site and approved progression to concept design.
