Why are we doing this?
To meet Council’s commitment to early childhood education and care, North St Kilda Children’s Centre will be upgraded to ensure it is fit for purpose and future ready.
This redevelopment is part of Council’s Kindergarten Infrastructure Services Plan which aligns with the Victorian Governments commitment to provide two years of universal kindergarten to all children by 2036. As part of this commitment there is a need to optimise the use of existing services.
The redevelopment of North St Kilda Children’s Centre supports the Best Start Best Life reforms that will see an increase in demand for kindergarten places that will increase to 30 hours of free kindergarten education in the year before school for all 4-year-old children.
The impact
Council will be relocating some of its programs from North St Kilda Children’s Centre to Bubup Nairm Children’s Centre from January 2026. To ensure all children at North St Kilda have a place, Council will:
- Continue to offer a limited number of places at North St Kilda Children’s Centre
- Expand Bubup Nairm Children’s Centre to offer more places for North St Kilda Children’s Centre children and staff.
- Through the Central Waitlist (CSIRE), identify vacancies across Port Phillip for North St Kilda families.
Objectives
- Upgrade North St Kilda Children’s Centre for ongoing provision of childcare and kindergarten.
- Support access to early education and care services for North St Kilda Children’s Centre families and the community during the upgrade.
