Why are we doing this?
Council are increasing public open space in the Balaclava/St Kilda East neighbourhood so that local residents and visitors have more space to relax and engage in green open space.
Council’s Places for People: Public Space Strategy 2022 – 2032 identified purchasing a residential property on Lansdowne Road for conversion into a public park as a priority action for the Balaclava/St Kilda East neighbourhood.
This project helps address the local shortage of open space and supports a healthier, more liveable community.
The impact
The site will be closed to the public for approximately 5 months while the park is constructed and the planting establishes. Once opened, the new park will provide a safe, welcoming environment that supports the physical, social and mental health of the community.
Objectives
The new park will deliver:
- A central open lawn with a raised picnic platform for passive recreation and socialising.
- Generous garden beds featuring indigenous and pollinator-friendly species to enhance biodiversity.
- Tree planting, planned to achieve 40% canopy coverage across the site by 2038, contributing to urban cooling.
- Informal nature play trail made of logs and boulders encouraging exploration and imaginative play.
- Amenities for comfort and cleanliness including accessible seating, a drinking fountain, and a rubbish bin.
