Why are we doing this?
The City of Port Phillip currently operates a public place CCTV network across Fitzroy Street, Little Grey Street, St Kilda Foreshore and Acland Streets precincts to help monitor public spaces and support community safety. Much of this system has been in place for many years and has provided ongoing support for local safety and amenity.
A significant portion of the existing CCTV equipment has now reached the end of its useful life. Older cameras and supporting equipment are more prone to faults, are no longer supported by manufacturers, and do not perform as reliably as modern systems. This increases the risk of outages and reduces the system’s overall effectiveness.
The CCTV Renewal Project is replacing ageing cameras and associated equipment that are no longer fit for purpose and reviewing the network to ensure it continues to operate reliably.
In addition, new CCTV cameras will be installed at two previously approved locations - Jackson Street Car Park, and George Lane, where improved coverage has been identified as beneficial for public safety.
The focus is on renewing and enhancing the existing network so that public safety infrastructure remains reliable and sustainable over time.
The impact
The Renewal Project is to maintain a reliable and effective CCTV network that supports community safety in public places. By renewing ageing equipment and enhance the current network, the project will improve system reliability, reduce maintenance risks, and ensure Council can continue to support safer, well‑monitored public spaces for residents, visitors, and local businesses.
Objectives
- Support community safety by renewing public place CCTV cameras that have reached the end of their useful life.
- Maintain reliable monitoring of public spaces so existing safety coverage can continue without disruption.
- Improve reliability of the CCTV network by reducing faults and outages caused by ageing equipment.
