Location

The Danks Street median between Mills Street, Albert Park and Esplanade East, Port Melbourne

Cost

$400,000. The project is fully funded by funded by a contribution from the Victorian State Government Department of Transport and Planning, which is constructing a tram power substation at the intersection of Victoria Avenue and Danks Street.

Why are we doing this?

The Danks Street Biolink builds on a community‑led planting that transformed a traditional grassed median into a diverse biodiversity corridor with layered understory planting. Delivered in stages over four years and completed in 2024, the original project created habitat for local fauna while also providing shade, greenery and amenity benefits for the surrounding community.

The current works enhance this established planting, ensuring it continues to mature as a resilient and high‑quality urban habitat.

With additional funding, Council has reviewed the existing Biolink and engaged ecologists to provide specialist advice to guide improvements. The advice focuses on strengthening habitat quality and long‑term ecological outcomes through improved soil amelioration and mulching practices, structuring vegetation layers to better support small bird communities, and reintroducing native mistletoe to enhance food sources within the urban forest. It also includes the ongoing maintenance and monitoring of existing habitat and nest boxes, as well as identifying local pollinator species and their habitat requirements to inform planting and design decisions.

Several new habitat elements have also been introduced.

In a Victorian first, four Cockitroughs have been installed along the Biolink. This innovative design was developed by a Western Australian council and supports wildlife by safely providing fauna access to fresh water.

Community‑supported artworks along the Biolink, created by local artist Frank Artuso, have been retained and integrated into the updated design, reflecting the strong sense of local ownership and identity associated with the project.

Education and community involvement remain central to the project. Working with a local ecologist, students from Albert Park College have learned about local pollinators and helped create habitat for them. The bee hotels they designed will be installed at median ends, celebrating student participation while contributing to biodiversity outcomes.

Together, these improvements strengthen the Danks Street Biolink as an ecologically rich, community‑supported green corridor, delivering lasting benefits for wildlife and for people who live, work and travel along the street.

The impact

Sections of the median may be blocked to pedestrian traffic to enable planting works. There may be brief lane closures to facilitate the placement of habitat logs at median ends, otherwise no road closures are anticipated.

Objectives

The Danks Street Biolink improvement project delivers the following new features and enhancements:

  • Improved planting design informed by specialist ecological advice
  • Soil amelioration and updated mulching practices to support a biodiversity planting
  • Added habitat structure to better support small bird communities
  • Reintroduction of native mistletoe and related species (e.g. Quandong) within the urban forest
  • Maintenance and monitoring of existing habitat and nest boxes
  • Installation of four Cockitrough wildlife watering stations
  • Retention and integration of existing community artworks
  • Student‑designed pollinator habitat, including bee hotels at median ends
  • Additional planting of 153 native trees and large shrubs and 6,400 native plants, with over 90% of understorey plant species locally indigenous to Port Phillip

Expert ecological advice has been sought to inform the design of the renewal planting. Reports can be accessed here:

These practical advices have application beyond the scope of the Danks Street Biolink and will help inform best practice environmental management across the municipality.
