Why are we doing this?
In 2023 Council purchased the former Australia Post site at 509 Williamstown Road. Australia Post vacated in December 2025 and since then, there have been consistent unauthorised access and vandalism causing safety concerns. Due to these safety concerns Council has made the decision to demolish the building.
Spanning 15,000 square metres, the site will be eventually transformed into a vibrant public space with modern recreation facilities for the community. Future plans for the site will be subject to a master planning and community engagement process. This investment forms part of the early stages of the urban renewal of Fishermans Bend - Australia’s largest urban renewal precinct - which will support up to 80,000 residents and 80,000 workers by 2050. With more than 10,000 new homes already planned, the redevelopment of this site will deliver much‑needed open space and help establish a major recreation precinct for the area.
The impact
Demolition works will be delivered in stages:
- Phase 1 will involve the demolition of the existing Australia Post office and warehouse buildings. Works will commence on 25 May 2026 and are expected to be completed by early July 2026.
- Phase 2 is scheduled to commence in September 2026 and will involve removal of the CitiPower substation building and associated office. This staging allows for required CitiPower decommissioning works to be completed prior to demolition.
This stage of demolition works will be completed in October 2026 and undertaken in accordance with permit conditions and relevant safety requirements to minimise impacts on the surrounding area. Some short‑term impacts may include:
- Construction noise
- Increased noise from demolition equipment and vehicles.
- Works will be scheduled during approved construction hours in line with Council regulations.
- Dust and air quality
- Temporary dust generation during demolition activities.
- Dust suppression measures (such as water spraying and site covering) will be used to reduce impacts.
- Traffic and access changes
- Increased movement of construction vehicles entering and leaving the site.
- Temporary traffic management arrangements may be required near Williamstown Road and surrounding streets.
Pedestrian and cyclist safety will be prioritised at all times.
Objectives
The demolition works will prepare the former Australia Post site for future use by removing existing buildings and making the area safe and secure.
Key deliverables include:
- Safe demolition of the former Australia Post office and warehouse buildings
- Removal of the CitiPower substation building and associated office following decommissioning
These works are an important first step in improving the site. The buildings are no longer in use and have experienced repeated unauthorised access. Removing them will reduce safety risks and ensure the land is cleared and ready for future works.
