Why are we doing this?
The existing facility was constructed in 2010 across Council managed and St Mary’s Parish owned land. It includes two full-sized multipurpose courts equipped with basketball towers, futsal and small ball line markings, and sleeves for volleyball nets.
The courts are currently in poor condition due to a lack of regular maintenance and ongoing vehicle access, which has damaged the court surface. As a result, they now present safety risks to users. These courts offer valuable opportunities for informal participation in recreation and physical activity, with limited options to replicate such a facility elsewhere in the municipality. Upgrading the courts is essential to ensure continued use at this location and to address the current safety concerns stemming from their deteriorated condition.
The impact
Construction works will be delivered in two stages.
Stage 1 is expected to commence in May 2026 and be completed by June 2026. Stage 1 will include civil works, sports equipment installation, and temporary court line marking.
Stage 2 will involve the acrylic surface treatment application and is scheduled to commence in September 2026, with completion anticipated in October 2026. This timing allows the acrylic surface to cure under suitable weather conditions, supporting optimal surface performance, installation quality, and compliance with warranty requirements.
The following impacts are anticipated during construction period:
- The courts will not be accessible to the public (including the adjoining St Mary’s Parish and School) during the construction stages.
- Interim public access to the courts will be available between construction stages.
- Protective fencing will be installed around the works zone to ensure safety.
- A portion of the car park located to the east of the courts may be temporarily closed to facilitate construction activities.
- Construction works and vehicle access will be coordinated closely with the Parish and school to minimise disruption.
- Traffic management measures will be implemented to manage construction vehicle access and movements within the park and at the park’s access point on Dandenong Road.
Objectives
- Resurfaced multipurpose hard courts, including netball, basketball, volleyball, futsal and pickleball with line markings.
- Bollards to be installed to restrict vehicle access.
