Electric vehicle chargers
Public electric vehicle chargers
Electric vehicles (EVs) are becoming more popular, accounting for almost 23% of new car sales in March 2026. We're excited to support our community in this space, working with providers to increase the EV charging network across the City of Port Phillip.
There are two types of EV chargers available to our community, pole-mounted chargers and fast chargers. Our public EV chargers have dedicated parking bays to use while charging, and require payment via an app.
Pole-mounted chargers
Pole-mounted EV chargers are installed directly onto existing electricity poles in residential areas. These 22kW chargers have dedicated parking bays to charge two vehicles at a time, require users to bring their own cables, and take about three to five hours to reach full charge.
In early 2026, three new pole-mounted chargers were installed at the following locations:
- 85 Liardet Street, Port Melbourne
- 24 Chaucer Street, St Kilda
- 27-31 Herbert Street, St Kilda
Fast chargers
Fast chargers are standalone charging units, usually installed in activity centres. These 150kW chargers provide charging cables, and can fully charge a vehicle within 30 to 60 minutes.
In April 2026, installation commenced on a fast charger in the Council car park at 228 Park Street, South Melbourne.
Over the next two years, we're working with providers to install and manage five public fast chargers on Council land at Balaclava, Garden City, Albert Park, Port Melbourne and South Melbourne. Several other potential sites are being evaluated, and we are working through challenges such as redevelopments and power availability.

Private electric vehicle chargers
We understand it's more difficult for our community to charge their EVs if they don't have off-street parking.
That's why we’re expanding our private kerbside EV charger pilot from the single option of a kerbside charger. More information on applying for permits for cross-pavement EV chargers (where the cable is temporarily placed into a gulley recess in the pavement when charging) will be coming soon.
Our existing private kerbside chargers are private infrastructure installed on public land, and utilise electricity from your home. For more information on eligibility or to apply for a kerbside charger, please fill out our charging application form.
Our private EV charger model will continue until mid-2028 or until 100 chargers have been installed, after which the model will be reviewed.
