Why are we doing this?
Burnett Gray Gardens Playspace was installed 25 years ago and is due for an upgrade. It is designated as a local public playspace in Council’s Place for People: Public Space Strategy 2022-2032 (PSS) and Play Space Strategy.
A local play space is intended for use by people who live within walking distance and should:
- Reflect its local context
- Be integrated with trees and planting
- Cater for the needs of local residents
- Be designed for short, frequent visits.
Burnett Gray Gardens is the only public open space in Ripponlea; however significant public open space outside the municipality adjoins this neighbourhood including Ripponlea Estate and Elsternwick Park.
The impact
The playground and surrounding grassed area will be inaccessible during the construction of the new playground. Restrictions to pedestrian access to the station will be minimised and managed on site during construction.
Objectives
The playspace upgrade will include:
- Upgraded playground equipment
- Improved accessibility
- Improved safety
- Additional seating
- Improved garden bed and tree planting
- Increased tree canopy shade cover.
