Youth Advisory Committee (YAC)

What is the Youth Advisory Committee?

The Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) is a group of local young people aged 15–25 who contribute youth perspectives to Council decision-making in the City of Port Phillip.

The YAC meets fortnightly and offers members training and upskilling throughout their term. Members are actively consulted by Council departments on policies, programs and initiatives affecting young people, lead community projects, and will co-design and help deliver the 2026 Youth Summit.

We are seeking passionate young people with diverse experiences and perspectives and encourage anyone interested to apply. Applicants must live, study or can demonstrate a strong connection in the City of Port Phillip.

Youth Summit 2024
In July 2024, the Youth Advisory Committee assisted with the delivery of Councils very first Youth Summit, which saw over 75 young people come together to discuss and provide feedback to Council on 5 key topics affecting young people in the local area.
Mural Art Project 2022
Early in April 2022 the Youth Advisory Committee transformed a Chapel Street substation by painting a mural under the guidance of artist Queensland-based artist Alison Mooney. The Committee worked together to develop a project brief, researched and communicated with various artists, and assisted with painting the mural on the day.
The committee liaised with the Graffiti Mitigation team at Port Phillip with the added benefit of discouraging graffiti by painting a mural.
Winter Workshops 2022
In August 2022 the YAC delivered a series of workshops for young people within the City of Port Phillip that aimed to equip them with essential skills to better themselves and the community including first aid, wildlife garden design and self-defense.

What is the Youth Events Committee

The Youth Events Committee is a group of young people aged 15 to 25 who work together on planning and running events for young people in the City of Port Phillip. These events provide important opportunities for young, up-and-coming artists and musicians to gain experience and get paid for their talents!

This program is currently at capacity and not accepting any applicants. Please get in touch with our team via youth@portphillip.vic.gov.au if you would like any additional information.

Rawkus Live!
Rawkus Live! is an event series run in collaboration with Rock Academy in the iconic Espy Basement. The committee are involved with curating each lineup, designing promotional materials and assisting with running each gig.
St Kilda Festival
Our youth events committee play a vital role in hosting the youth stage at St Kilda Fest each year. The team assist with booking artists, marketing, stage management, production, photography/videography and more.
St Kilda Film Festival
Our committee are responsible for hosting the Under 21s category 'Under the Radar' each year for the St Kilda Film Festival. The crew are in charge of watching all submitted films, judging each film and selecting the top 10 films and overall winner. The committee also organises and runs the official screening night which features a live Q&A with some of the young film makers.
Minus18 Collaboration
The committee also work in collaboration with youth organisation Minus18 on one event per year. In previous years the team have been involved in the creation and implementation of Minus18's iconic Queer Formal, Purple Pride Party and Spooktober events. Stay up to date with all events hosted by Minus18 on their website.
Battle of the Bands
Working alongside the Stonnington events committee, we deliver an annual battle of the bands event, where young performers battle it out for a chance to win over $1,500 worth of prizes, including a recording session at Collarts Studio.
