St Kilda Adventure Playground Upgrade

Exciting upgrades are underway at St Kilda Adventure Playground! We’re upgrading the playground while keeping the adventure alive, building on the fun, imagination, and community spirit that make it a favourite for all ages.

Location

Neptune Street, St Kilda

Cost

$2.44M has been allocated to design and deliver renewal and upgrade works at The St Kilda Adventure Playground. Funding for the project is supported in part by the Commonwealth’s Thriving Suburbs Grant.

Milestones

Why are we doing this?

The playground is a community institution that has been and remains a centre of play for generations of locals. But as the play equipment ages, it becomes less safe for kids to play on. We want to improve this beloved place where local kids can have fun, use their imagination, make friends and enjoy nature.

The impact

The project will deliver a revitalised, inclusive, and safe playground that supports imaginative and social play and aligns with Council’s strategic goals for liveability, inclusion, and public space activation.

Objectives

St Kilda Adventure Playground has traditionally served as urban backyards for local children and young people, who have limited access to open spaces, social interaction, support and programming.

In today's increasingly risk adverse environment such opportunities are rapidly disappearing. It's a place where children can use their imagination, play, create and socialise with other children in positive ways to enhance their growth and development.

Project Update (November 2025)

Thanks to ideas and input from local children and the community, we are ready to tender for the playground contractor.

The project will be delivered in two phases:

Phase 1 - Landscape upgrade

Elements include:

  • Accessible pathways
  • Shelter, large table, seating and drink fountain
  • Lighting
  • Recycled brick paving and tyre obstacles
  • Allowance for water play
  • New garden bed and tree planting
  • Irrigation
  • The existing tree canopy will be retained.
  • The popular trampoline and the basketball court will be retained.

Phase 2 - The new Clubhouse

Elements include:

  • Large multi-purpose area
  • Storage
  • Kitchen facilities
  • Office space
  • Kiln room
  • Two toilets
  • Large, covered deck

A local artist will be engaged in early 2026 to work with program children and staff to develop artworks that can be installed in the new playground. Where possible, beloved art works and unique items created by the children over the years will be carefully removed with the assistance of park staff for installation into the new playground. A detailed inventory of these items has been developed.

Following the evaluation of tender submissions a landscape contractor will be appointed at Council in early 2026, and we anticipate works to commence in April 2026 with completion in October 2026.

Children’s services will be relocated during the construction period and to ensure community safety, there will be no public access to the park during construction.
