Safety improvements on Alma Road St Kilda East

We're making Alma Road safer and more connected for everyone by installing a raised crossing with flashing lights and speed humps on Alma Road.

Concept design: raised crossing with flashing lights and speed humps

Location

Alma Road, St Kilda East

Cost

This project is funded by Council.

Milestones

Why are we doing this?

Port Phillip’s Community Vision tells us residents want to live in safe, well-connected neighbourhoods. Currently, there are no safe crossing points on Alma Road between Chapel Street and Westbury Street, despite high numbers of children travelling to school in this area and people accessing Alma Park by walking.

That's why we are proposing to install a raised crossing with flashing lights and speed humps on Alma Road, near Raglan Street. This will create a safe connection to Alma Park for people walking, including children travelling to St Mary’s Primary, Prahran-Windsor Primary, St Michael’s College and Presentation College.

The impact

Raised crossings improve accessibility and safety by making people more visible to drivers while they are crossing, especially children. Combined with speed humps, they also ensure drivers are travelling at safer speeds as they reach the crossing. This reduces the likelihood of and the consequences of crashes. Raised crossings also reduce tripping hazards for older and vision-impaired walkers.

The proposed works will result in the loss of four parking spaces on Alma Road: three on the park side of Alma Road and one in front of 101 Alma Road. The removal of parking is necessary to accommodate kerb extensions which will enhance the safety of the pedestrian crossing by improving sightlines.

Objectives

This project will improve safety for everyone in our community, especially children and older people.
