Why are we doing this?
Princes Street is included within this year’s Greening Port Phillip program, which brings new street tree planting and biodiversity improvements to selected streets. The program adds canopy, enhances habitat and creates cooler, greener and more liveable neighbourhoods under the Urban Forest Strategy.
The impact
Construction works for the Princes Street in‑road tree planting project will involve upgrading existing tree plots and creating new tree plots. While these works are underway, there will be some temporary impacts for residents and road users, including:
- Reduced access in some areas while construction crews are working.
- Partial road closures at times to ensure works can be completed safely.
- Temporary loss of some on‑street parking spaces while new tree plots are installed.
Where parking or access is reduced, nearby alternatives will be available, and signage will be in place to help guide road users. We’ll work to minimise disruption wherever possible and keep impacts as short‑term as we can.Once complete, the project will deliver a greener and more attractive Princes Street by increasing the number and quality of street trees. In addition to enhanced tree canopy and improved amenity, the final layout will also provide one additional on‑street parking bay compared to the current arrangement.
Objectives
- Increase tree canopy cover by planting 12 new trees in improved growing conditions.
- Cooler and greener city by increasing permeable surfaces
