Why are we doing this?
What is a Biolink?
Biolinks are wildlife corridors that connect pockets of native vegetation and provide habitat for local fauna. They allow animals to more easily move between areas, increasing the amount of habitat available to them. A focus on planting locally indigenous plant species helps preserve local flora. Why are we doing this?
The Biolink was created in 2019 to improve habitat and support biodiversity, with an initial focus on creating garden beds and establishing native vegetation. External funding now gives us an opportunity to improve the structure and diversity of the vegetation and introduce additional amenities to support biodiversity and the community.
The impact
Following community consultation, we’re starting to roll out initiatives along the Biolink to improve native habitat and support biodiversity, including water for wildlife, improved nestbox maintenance and monitoring, and the introduction of more locally indigenous plant species.
The reports and responses from community engagement have informed the design of the renewal planting, which will be completed by the end of June 2026. More public seating will be included, as well as additional rubbish bins.
The new planting will include at least 80% locally indigenous plant species, as well as rare and trial native trees, shrubs and grasses.
There will be future opportunities for the community to connect to the space via community planting events and ongoing biodiversity surveys.
