Why are we doing this?
To meet the increasing demand for childcare and kindergarten as part of the Best Start Best Life initiative from the Victorian Government, Clarendon Children’s Centre will be upgraded.
The future of the service is undermined by inadequacies in the facility's condition, size, functionality and accessibility. With increasing development activity and projected population growth in the catchment area, the facility will be required to increase capacity, as well as align the facility conditions with modern accessibility standards, such as wider hallways and compliant building ramp.
The impact
Council is working with the Clarendon Children’s Centre Committee of Management to find a suitable site to relocate the early education and care program during the construction period in 2027.
Publicly accessible bathrooms inside the Koolin-Ngal Family Centre are currently being used primarily by Toy-Library and Maternal Health facilities will also be closed. Apart from the restrooms, no other changes to the operations or facilities for these two services are being proposed.
There will be some localised impacts caused during the construction works, such as traffic, and noise. Extent and the management of these will be considered and mitigated by the builders, once the tender is awarded.
Objectives
- Upgraded children’s centre providing 66 licensed places
- Support the ongoing operation of Clarendon Children's Centre during the upgrade.
Milestones
Town planning permit: 2025
Construction complete: 2027
Opening: 2028
