Alma Park playspace upgrade

We are upgrading the playspace at Alma Park to improve safety, accessibility, and play value.

Location

Alma Park East

Cost

$300,000

Milestones

Why are we doing this?

The existing play space has been temporarily closed following a safety audit. To provide a safer and more enjoyable experience for everyone, Council is now undertaking an upgrade that will improve the site’s safety, accessibility, and long‑term durability.

The upgrade will include:

  • New rubber soft fall surfacing with integrated slide feature
  • A tunnel play element with new surrounding plantings
  • Grab rails to improve access, including near the internal pole slide feature
  • Upgrades to the existing balustrade across the Snail façade to meet current safety standards whilst retaining the artistic impression of the site.
  • A new concrete sub‑base and rubber soft fall will be installed. These materials offer significantly greater durability and longevity than the previous construction, helping to reduce long‑term maintenance and deterioration.

The new design builds on the character of the play space, introducing enhanced colour, improved play value, and a refreshed visual identity that remains true to the spirit of the original structure.

To support the construction and ensure the success of the new design, some tree removals are required. Replacement planting will occur nearby.

The impact

The Alma Park Snail will remain closed until completion in late September 2026.

Objectives

We’re upgrading the play area to make it safer, more durable, and more fun. The project will fix issues identified in a recent safety audit, install new rubber softfall, preserve the much‑loved heritage snail, refresh surrounding features, and create a more engaging space that encourages active, imaginative, and social play.
