Pitch Perfect – JL Murphy Reserve pitches officially launched

On 1 December, Mayor Alex Makin was joined by Member for Albert Park, Nina Taylor and representatives from Middle Park Football Club and Port Melbourne Soccer Club to celebrate the occasion.
As the largest Council-managed sporting precinct, JL Murphy Reserve is a vital hub for sport, recreation and community connection. Council has invested $5 million in upgrading two sports grounds, with additional support of $275,000 from the Victorian Government. These improvements ensure the reserve continues to meet the evolving needs of our community and remains fit for the future.
What’s new?
- Pitch 2 now features an upgraded natural surface and improved sports ground lighting.
- Pitch 3 has been transformed from turf to a synthetic surface, complemented by upgraded lighting. This is the first synthetic sports ground delivered by Council, increasing durability and capacity for use by clubs, schools and community groups in all weather conditions.

Sustainability was a key focus for this project, with cork infill used on the synthetic pitch to reduce environmental impact and LED lighting installed to improve energy efficiency.
Beyond the sports grounds, the upgrade also includes enhanced pedestrian access, new seating and additional lighting throughout the reserve, making it more welcoming and accessible for everyone.
JL Murphy Reserve is home to local sporting clubs across six sports grounds, as well as a half-court basketball court, a playground, two pavilions, and a thriving community garden. These upgrades reflect Council’s commitment to creating multi-use, inclusive and accessible spaces that support active lifestyles and social connection.
