Be prepared for extreme heat

Published 6 January 2026
An extended period of heat is forecast across Melbourne from 7 to 9 January with temperatures reaching up to 41 degrees.

Being ready for extreme heat can make a real difference to your health and safety.

Follow these essential tips to help you stay cool, comfortable and protected over the coming days.

  1. Drink plenty of water, even if you’re not thirsty.
  2. Stay indoors in a cool place such as your home, a library, community centre or shopping centre.
  3. Close your windows and draw blinds, curtains or awnings early in the day to keep the heat out of your home.
  4. ️‍Limit movement (including walking dogs).
  5. Check in with others regularly – especially those at higher risk.
  6. Never leave people or pets in parked vehicles.
  7. Watch for heat-related illness – spot symptoms early and seek medical help if needed.
  8. Ensure your pets have constant access to cool, fresh water and shade.
