Election outcomes for the Seat of Macnamara
As announced on 3 May, Josh Burns was re-elected to represent the seat of Macnamara, and the Labor party was re-elected to lead the Federal Government. Local Federal Senators James Patterson (Liberal Party) and Steph Hodgins-May (Greens) were also re-elected to the Australian Senate.
City of Port Phillip launched a proactive advocacy campaign ahead of the 2025 Federal Election to promote commitments that reflect the priorities of our diverse and vibrant community. Matched with several strong community campaigns, Port Phillip was recipient to several commitments across the major parties.
With the election now concluded, we are pleased to share the outcomes of these efforts and outline the next steps in delivering on these commitments. Over the coming term, Council will work closely with Josh Burns, MP to ensure local commitments, where council are a partner, are delivered in alignment with the Council Plan.

Advocacy items
The Priority Project Opportunities document outlined major initiatives within the municipality where Council sought Federal Government partnership for funding and delivery. This document was presented to candidates contesting the seat of Macnamara, encouraging them to incorporate these priorities into their election platforms.

Council welcomes the commitments made by successful Josh Burns, MP and the Australian Labor Party during the federal election campaign, particularly those relating to the City of Port Phillip, including:

What happens next?
These commitments represent significant wins for our community and reflect the strength of collaborative advocacy from the community and Council. Moving forward, Council will:
- Partner with the local Member of Parliament and Federal Government where Council is involved on the commitment
- Communicate progress on commitments to the community via our website and social media platforms
- Continue advocating for priorities not yet funded.
