Route 109 Terminus duplication
Council is advocating to the Victorian Government to fund and deliver an upgrade and track duplication of the Route 109 Port Melbourne terminus at Waterfront Place, near Station Pier. This is the final stop on Route 109 which connects Port Melbourne to Box Hill via the Melbourne CBD.
The current terminus operates on a single track, limiting the route’s capacity for more frequent services. Duplicating the track (including providing a second platform) will enable more trams to turn around per hour boosting service frequency.
In 2026 the Victorian Government will commence construction on a new electricity substation for Route 109 in Port Melbourne. This substation will improve the route’s reliability and will support increased services in the future.
Upgrading the Route 109 terminus in Port Melbourne would enhance the safety and amenity in the adjoining public realm, and provide a better experience for locals and visitors.
Park Street Tram Link
Council is advocating to the Victorian Government to fund and deliver the Park Street Tram Link, a 300-metre section of new track between Kings Way and Heather Street in South Melbourne. This link was identified in the Metro Tunnel business case as critical to providing a gateway to South Melbourne from Anzac Station.
The Park Street Tram Link would allow tram services to deviate from St Kilda Road and run into the city via Clarendon Street. It would also provide a direct public transport connection from the South Melbourne Activity Centre to Anzac Station, removing the need for pedestrians to cross busy Kings Way.
In January 2025, the Minister for Transport Infrastructure confirmed that the project will not be delivered prior to the commencement of Metro Tunnel services as originally proposed. The Government has advised it will consider new travel patterns, community feedback, infrastructure requirements, and vehicle movements before making a decision on delivery and timing.
