City of Port Phillip Welcomes Election Commitments for Australian National Academy of Music at South Melbourne Town Hall

South Melbourne Town Hall
City of Port Phillip has long been a champion of the arts and music, with a proud history of fostering creativity and cultural enrichment. For over three decades, the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) has been at the heart of this legacy, captivating the community with its world-class music programs from its home at the historic South Melbourne Town Hall.
In 2023, recognising the building's profound cultural and historical significance, Council awarded ANAM a 35-year lease, with an option to extend to 50 years. This agreement is contingent on significant capital investment by ANAM, and Council has already committed approximately $40 million to breathe new life into the Town Hall, ensuring its future as a vibrant hub for arts and culture.
Adding to this momentum, ANAM and the Town Hall have secured election commitments from both the Greens and Labor candidates for the electorate of Macnamara. On 24 March, Greens candidate, Sonya Semmens was joined by Senator Hanson-Young to announce a $12.5 million commitment to restore the space and give ANAM a permanent home. On 17 April 2025, Labor candidate, Josh Burns matched this with a $12.5 million election commitment.
Planned refurbishments include modernising performance and hospitality spaces, upgrading aged services and practice areas, and preserving the building’s architectural heritage. Energy efficiency improvements will also be prioritised, aligning with contemporary sustainability standards. These works are set to commence in 2026-2027, with ANAM anticipated to return to its revitalised home by 2028, enhancing this cherished landmark’s role as a cultural beacon.
City of Port Phillip has a strong vision for fostering creativity and preserving heritage. As the South Melbourne Town Hall celebrates over 140 years as a beloved landmark, it is poised to inspire and serve generations to come.
Congratulations to ANAM for their tireless advocacy in securing this substantial commitment, ensuring the Town Hall remains a cornerstone of cultural excellence.
