Street lighting

Most street lights within the City of Port Phillip are owned and maintained by CitiPower or United Energy.  We fund the maintenance of existing street lights and installing new street lights. The Department of Transport contributes to the cost for street lights on major roads.

Street lighting upgrade

We've worked with in partnership with CitiPower, to upgrade 3,200 existing old street lights to energy efficient lights. These street lights use less energy and require less maintenance. This leads to lower operating costs and reduced greenhouse emissions.

Street lights are currently our biggest source of greenhouse gas emissions and this upgrade helps us avoid over 22,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas over the next 20 years. This will reduce our net greenhouse gas emissions by around 10 per cent.

See these FAQ for more information on the street lighting upgrade (PDF, 79 KB).
