JL Murphy Baseball Field upgrade

We're installing new sports ground lighting and upgrading the baseball diamond.

Location

JL Murphy Reserve baseball field, Port Melbourne

Cost

$1.4 million to install the new sports ground lighting and upgrade the baseball diamond.

Milestones

Why are we doing this?

We are committed to providing our local community with greater access to sport and recreation opportunities.

There is no existing lighting at JL Murphy baseball field, the proposed upgrade will provide lighting that meets current Australian Standards and state sporting associations.

The baseball infield at JL Murphy Reserve was last upgraded more than 10 years ago. In its current condition, the field does not provide a suitable and safe environment for participants. The field has rocks penetrating the surface due to the failing sub surface resulting in potentially dangerous conditions for those participating.

The impact

The baseball field will remain open during the lighting upgrade. However, minor disruptions may occur around the perimeter of the sportsgrounds. The infield section of the field will be completely when the playing surface is upgraded.

All works on the baseball field are expected to conclude prior to the start of summer in 2024.

Objectives

JL Murphy Reserve is a vibrant sport and recreation space at the heart of community activities in Port Melbourne. By installing lighting and upgrading the infield, our grounds will be accessible for night training and games. This will enable us to improve scheduling and increase the use of the park.

Ensuring the light covers the full sport areas will also help improve consistency in the ground cover across the park and will help spread oval use. This will reduce wear and tear to existing lit spaces.

Lighting

The sports lighting upgrade uses the latest technology to improve lighting coverage of the grounds and will provide greater opportunities for recreation and sport. The upgrade includes six new poles, positioned to allow for light to focus directly on the sports ground, eliminating light spill to surrounding areas.

The upgrade will use high-performance exterior lighting with the latest LED and dimming technology that will lower power consumption, eliminate upward light, and increase lamp life. Timing will be controlled remotely so they will turn off automatically.

Use

The sportsgrounds are currently lit at JL Murphy for nighttime training. There are no plans at this stage to extend the current lighting hours.
