2020 Commendations

Project name: Plain Sailing

Art Consultant: Fiona Drago Architect
Location: Elwood

From a strong vision through to connection and functionality this café blurs the boundaries of inside and out, extending and enriching the public realm and the perception of space from both sides. Sensitive to its context and enhancing busy Ormond Road, Plain Sailing is buzzing with activity as an inviting and delightful place to hang out. The design is well-planned, fit-for-purpose and generous, with careful resolution and employing well-detailed, sustainable materials such as natural timbers that ensure an engaging, functional and enduring design.

Project name: Yamaha Music Australia Head Office

Designer: StudioMint
Location: Southbank

Strong Japanese themes and history are pervasive here, and the resultant spaces exude simplicity and sophistication in this multi-functional and acoustically-controlled workspace. The delightful use of timber throughout allows the senses of those moving through it to come alive - smell, sight, touch and hearing are all ‘switched on’ here.

The layout and its detail ooze identity - an authentic, creativity that responds to its brief have led to a desk shaped as a guitar pick, and stairs pattern derived from the Japanese Asanda. Strength and the clarity of design concept and resolution have translated into a superior fit out.

2018 Winner

Project name: Dog's Bar

Designer: Dog's Bar St Kilda with Colin Sheppard and Grant Amon Architects
Location: St Kilda

With nods to the art of Mirka Mora and bohemian style, this fit-out captures what people fondly refer to as ‘the old St Kilda’ and makes it new again. The ‘Art Deco’ style, hand painted artwork and intricate design is testament to skill of the artist and a welcome addition to this St Kilda icon.

2018 Commendation

Project name: MeatworksCo

Designer: MeatworksCo
Location: South Melbourne

This fun, light-filled, evocative reinvention of a reused industrial building is brimming with interest. This smokehouse restaurant has taken the space, enhanced its light filled qualities and filled the walls with handcrafts and displays from the era of its building. The decoration conjures up an earlier time and the layout suggests that the kitchen is like a butcher’s shop from a past era.
