2020 Winner

Project name: Opera Urban Art

Art Consultant: ADA Consulting
Location: Melbourne

Opera Urban Art is another delightful contribution to Melbourne’s urban fabric from the late, exceptional artist Matthew Harding. The work offers a poetic and playful study on the organic and the feminine as a response to the arcing, curved architecture of the building behind it.

Riffing on fabric-like folds and pleats, its sensual curves and lines catch and bounce light, and its figure suggests movement - hinting at the joy of dance. The work enriches St. Kilda Road and the experience of residents and passers-by, and offers much to Melbourne's cultural richness and Harding’s outstanding legacy.

2018 Commendation

Project name: Ode

Art Consultant: Pace Development Group with Carr Design, Matthew Johnson and Peter Andrew Barrett
Location: St Kilda

This commendation is awarded to a collaborative public art offering that adds a richness and depth to central St Kilda’s already gritty urban realm. The scrawled hand written 'love letter' from the past across the newly reproduced Victorian façade gives it a palpable sense of age, and place that it might not otherwise have been expected to achieve. The Urban Art contribution to this busy intersection provides some much needed to colour to this mixed space.
