Where does City Plan fit into state government plans and neighbouring council's plans?
Planning and development in Port Phillip falls within the context set by the state government and particularly by Melbourne 2030.
Melbourne 2030 - Planning for Sustainable Growth is the state government's blue-print for growth and change in Melbourne. The state government maintains a dedicated website for Melbourne 2030
Melbourne 230 envisages "...an improved and expanded public transport network linked to activity centres which accommodate a broader mix of housing, shops and services, in order to create vibrant, well connected communities".
There is already considerable agreement between Melbourne 2030 and the council's current council plan and urban planning policy framework. Nevertheless there will be on-going urban change and we will need to carefully manage new development so that it mainly occurs in areas where there is the scope for change, without affecting the heritage and character of our established residential areas.
Development will also need to be done in a way that also means we're improving the liveability of local areas, the viability of our shopping strips and the opportunities for our community to participate in community life and access the services they require.
The inner councils of Melbourne, Stonnington, Port Phillip and Yarra, in association with VicUrban and the state government, are developing a regional framework for managing change within inner Melbourne. The plan here is the Inner Melbourne Action Plan (IMAP). The aim is to make the region more vibrant, liveable, accessible and creative.
These initiatives have been incorporated into city plan where relevant.
