The City of Port Phillip is a Waste Wise organisation and is committed to introducing effective waste management strategies within the organisation and across the wider Port Phillip community. In order for the council to meet its commitment under the waste wise agreement, Port Phillip is required to reduce, reuse and recycle council waste wherever possible. This includes events held throughout the municipality, both internal and external.
The amount of waste and litter generated at public events can be significant, creating unsightly mess and large clean-up costs. However, the general public expects the event environment to be 'clean and green'.
One of the main ways of achieving this is through Waste Wise events - accredited events meeting a standard of excellence in waste minimisation.
For function/event organisers, the Waste Wise event program involves seven steps:
- Commitment - to becoming a Waste Wise event
- Packaging - selecting packaging materials that reduce waste and litter and are easily recycled
- Equipment - matching equipment to the packaging material used
- Systems - matching a management system to the equipment and packaging used
- Standards - using standard signs and equipment to reduce confusion, where appropriate
- Communication - telling caterers, vendors and participants about your program before, during and after the event
- Evaluation - how effective has your Waste Wise program been?
The City of Port Phillip has now hosted a number of Waste Wise events including the Global Garden Party.
