Walking School Groups
One of the interesting and perhaps disturbing findings of a recent transport study was that many of the journeys taken by car in the city are quite small trips. A lot of these are forays of less than 400 metres, in fact, such as going to the local shops or dropping the kids at school.
Of course, most parents want to know their children are reaching the school gates. Wouldn't it be great, though, if security could be guaranteed without using automobiles, which contribute to gridlock and pollution problems, and also have some exercise for the children thrown into the bargain as well?
It's a method of reducing car travel, increasing physical activity and having lots of fun.
Why a walking school group?
A regular walking group provides children and parents with exercise on the school journey, as well as some time for children and parents to socialise. Because it's supervised by volunteer parents, it's a safe fun way for kids to get to school. Walking and cycling also reduce congestion and pollution. A 15 minute Walk to school is a quarter of the recommended daily intake of moderate physical activity by the national health physical activity taskforce.
Walking school group routes
Port Phillip was one of four Victorian councils to join VicHealth's pilot Walking School Bus program in 2002. The pilot proved extremely successful and re-launched the belief that Walking and Cycling to school was a safe, enjoyable and environmentally pro-active response to growing climate change urgency. Regular walking school groups have established at St Kilda Park, St Kilda, Middle Park, Albert Park and St Columba's (Elwood) primary and Port Melbourne Primary School. Several routes were established for each school with alterations and additions responding to new families joining in - for specific route details please contact the council's Sustainable Transport team.
Meanwhile, the kids who participate agree it is a great way to get to school. You too can be part of a Walking School Group.
Safer walking school groups
Supervised by volunteer parents, walking groups are are safe way to get to school. You can help make it safer for our kids by looking out for the walking school groups, especially when driving. For the sake of all pedestrians please take extra care when driving around areas with high pedestrian traffic, like schools.
Remember to stick to 40 kph around school sites if you can't avoid driving. Better still, leave your car at home and join the Walking & Cycling crew.
