Over the past couple of years surveys focusing on pedestrian access have been conducted by both Council and local residents of the Junction area.   As a result several areas for improvement were identified to improve the pedestrian environment.  In response many footpath improvements have been completed by council and plans for improvements to the pedestrian underpass at St.Kilda Road are underway.  A graffitti project has been completed to brighten up the area.

Why is it happening?

High quality pedestrian access is a vital element in creating vibrant and sustainable communities. Streets dominated by cars can be unfriendly, unsafe environments and get in the way of creating a living city with a community atmosphere. When access for pedestrians and cyclists is made the priority a street can become a useable open space allowing a community to see, talk and interact with each other. Streets are for living, not just driving.

There are loads of things to do in Alma Park, East St Kilda. There's walking paths, sports grounds and a great playground.

Do you find that local services and facilities are tricky to get to if you're on foot? Alma Park (pictured right) is a local facility close by to residents in the St Kilda Junction area. The council wants to make sure it's easy for you to walk to.

The concept of streets for living challenges the common assumption that streets are for cars and that those cars have automatic priority in all streets. To reverse this trend and reclaim streets as living open spaces, the council has commited to making walking, cycling and the use of public transport its three highest priorities in traffic management.
