Urban Art
What is Urban Art?
-
Urban art can be any artistic work in any medium that contributes to the community’s positive experience of public space in the urban environment.
-
Urban art can be expressed as a distinct integrated element within the built form of a building, or as a stand-alone artwork that complements the environment in which it is placed.
Why should I consider Urban Art?
-
Planning permits for large building projects in Port Phillip will normally include a condition specifying the extent of urban art required.
-
Other applicants wishing to distinguish their building projects should consider urban art as one of the design components that can achieve this outcome.
How do I incorporate art as part of a building project?
-
Identify the potential locations for urban art on the site (Council’s Urban Art Officer can assist you, see below)
-
Consider and respond to the heritage of the site, its use, the characteristics of its neighbourhood, its physical environment etc.
-
Consider and respond to the way the site is viewed from the public realm (ie by passing vehicles, pedestrians etc)
-
Identify an artist, designer or creative team according to the approach you decide to take.
Need help? Our Urban Art Officer is available to assist
Council employs an Urban Art Officer to assist with the urban art components of building projects. There are many ways that the Urban Art Officer can assist you.
-
Analysis of urban art potential
-
Feedback on proposed urban artworks
-
Liaison through all stages of your urban art project
If you are responding to an Urban Art condition you will need to satisfy the Urban Art Officer in regard to the quality and appropriateness of your Urban Art. It is strongly recommended that you discuss your Urban Art proposal with the Urban Art Officer at the earliest possible opportunity.
