Turville Place Reserve

Turville Place Reserve & Graham St  Overpass Precinct

The Turville Place Reserve and Graham St Overpass Precinct is suffering from wear and tear and is very much in need of an upgrade. The City of Port Phillip has prepared a Draft Precinct Plan in consultation with the local community in order to upgrade the area.

What has happened so far?

Consultation

A community consultation session was held on Saturday the 30th October, 2010 with local residents of the area and an on-site consultation/workshop session was held with the Grade 5 & 6 children from Port Melbourne Primary School (held on Friday the 19th November).
We also spoke to young people of the Port Melbourne and South Melbourne areas at the Youth Festival which was held at Sol Green Reserve on Friday the 3rd December, 2010.
We would like to thank everybody who has participated in the consultation sessions. Your input has been valuable and has been utilised to shape the new design for the precinct.

A summary of the key issues discussed at the consultation sessions are as follows:

1. Turville Place Reserve is mainly used as a thoroughfare for people walking between Bay Street and the light rail tram stop. It is also a popular route for children walking to Port Melbourne Primary School.

2. The Reserve is valued by the local community as a piece of open space within a highly urbanised environment.

3. Noise from the Graham Street Overpass, unclean areas under the bridge, conflicts between pedestrians and vehicles at crossing points and a lack of maintenance of Turville Place Reserve were brought up as key issues.

4. Suggested improvements for the Reserve include:

  • Better defined pedestrian routes through the Reserve to limit conflicts between pedestrian and vehicular traffic;
  • Lighting along pedestrian routes to improve safety at night;
  • New large tree planting;
  • Garden bed planting;
  • Improved seating;
  • Upgrade to the BMX track;
  • Upgrade to the basketball court (under the bridge);
  • A mural or artwork;
  • General clean-up and the addition of colour/artwork under the bridge and skate area.

Draft Precinct Plan

Feedback from the consultation sessions has been used to develop a Draft Precinct Plan for the Turville Place Reserve and Graham St Overpass area.
