Tree Summit - Outcomes

Imagine our city without trees............

Tree Summit 2009 Consultation Summery Part A

Tree Summit 2009 Consultation Summery Part B

At least 200 residents attended council’s Tree Summits  in October and November 2009, to have their say about tree and nature strip management.

The outcomes of the summit will be used to help council develop a comprehensive tree strategy and policy, with the intent to add more trees, and better manage existing trees.

A comprehensive streetscape assessment of every street in Port Phillip has also been conducted. It looked at current tree species and future planting opportunities, and will help guide council in determining where improvements can be made.

Council’s current Street Tree Policy 2001-2006 has expired and there is a need for a new tree management policy to be developed that takes into account changing climatic conditions, sustained drought and current and future community needs and expectations.

“We are extremely pleased with the success of the tree summits.  Attendance rates were higher than expected, and we were able to compile a huge amount of information from attendees.  Information that will help guide council’s future decision-making,” said former Mayor Cr Frank O’Connor.

The tree summits were held in St Kilda and Port Melbourne Town Halls.  Attendees were able to provide their ideas and opinions in a number of ways including voting via an interactive polling keypad.

The tree summits have shown council that trees and nature strips are really important to the community.  They provide a unique character to our streets and neighbourhoods, they provide shade, wildlife habitat, and they make our city move liveable.

Council has also launched its‘adopt a tree’ program and we are encouraging people to adopt a tree in their street or neighbourhood and water it using greywater from their bathtub, sink and washing machine using biodegradable detergents.

Hot summers and prolonged drought are impacting the health of trees and council wants to help residents help trees.

Council is giving away free buckets to Port Phillip residents.  Buckets can be picked up at council libraries, and Port Melbourne, South Melbourne, and St Kilda Town Halls.
