Tree Planting Printer friendly Email to a friend   Rate this page

Tree planting occurs annually between June and September. During this time, missing trees are replaced and new trees may be introduced.

Trees in our city are removed for a variety of reasons - natural decline, poor structure and for causing considerable damage to surrounding areas due to root growth.

The City of Port Phillip's target is to plant 1000 new trees each year. New streetscapes are developed and implemented after consultation with residents.

Tree species

The council plants a large variety of trees throughout the municipality. Where existing streetscapes are in place, new trees planted to replace those that have died match the others in the street.

The most frequently used trees within our municipality are Ornamental Pears,  Kanooka Water Gum and Coast Banksia (adapted to coastal conditions).

Maintenance

Once planted, new trees are watered, staked and mulched to ensure they get the best possible start to life. We also encourages residents to help with the care of their new trees.

The council's street tree watering program focuses on establishing new trees - watering them twice a week throughout spring and summer for the first two years until they are established.

Residents are encouraged to help care for their street trees. Go to the Adopt a Street Tree page or download the 1 second download via 56K modemAdopt a Street Tree flyer for tips.
