TravelSMART Communities

TravelSMART Communities works directly with households to help people choose sustainable transport solutions that meet their needs for work, education, family, social and recreational activities.

In 2005, TravelSMART Communities will encourage up to 45,000 households within the City of Maribyrnong and City of Moonee Valley to use public transport, walking, cycling or smarter car use.

TravelSMART Communities has run a number of pilots and large scale demonstration projects in metropolitan Melbourne, including the original pilot in Elwood.

The City of Port Phillip will pursue future opportunities to be involved with the TravelSMART Communities program.

Walking

Get fit while going from A to B. For short trips, walking is likely to be faster, less stressful and more fun than driving. And walking warms you up from the inside.

TravelSmart offer an excellent service for keeping track of how far you're walking. WalkSmart is a website where you can log your steps, get information and advice about walking and receive encouragement through their regular emails.

Check out www.walksmart.net to register and start keeping a track on how much walking you've been getting up to!

More information: www.portphillip.vic.gov.au/walking.html.

Cycling

Port Phillip's geographic location combined with better than average bicycle facilities and low journey-to-work travel distances makes cycling an attractive, healthy and environmentally friendly form of transport.

The city has an extensive on- and off-road bicycle network connecting the majority of areas within the municipality. There are approximately 49km of existing on-road routes and 14.5km of existing off-road routes, not including Albert Park. Cycling in Port Phillip will get you where you want to go.

The Port Phillip Bicycle User Group has been created and only needs as many interested cyclists as possible to create the cycling environment you want.

TravelSmart offer an excellent service for keeping track of how far you're cycling. CycleSmart is a website where you can log your km's, get information and advice about cycling and receive encouragement through their regular enmails.

Check out www.cyclesmart.net to register and start keeping a track on how many km's you've been clocking up!

Smart car use

When you do have to travel by car try to combine activities in the one area to save on the amount of trips. Car-pool if possible. Remember to keep your car tuned and drive at a consistent speed to reduce pollution.

TeleAccess
