New taxi ranks for St Kilda
It's getting easier and safer to catch a cab in St Kilda's popular shopping strips. The council's traffic engineers have installed a new full time taxi rank with space for two taxis in front of the Vineyard on Acland Street, and a full time rank with space for three cabs is now in place outside the Foodchain store at the St Kilda light rail stop on Fitzroy Street.
And to cope with peak times? A night time taxi rank operating from 10pm to 5am daily with room for 12 cabs will stretch along Fitzroy Street between St Kilda Cellars and The Prince. This rank will shrink to two spaces during the day as part of a new full time rank operating outside the Marque Hotel.
The City of Port Phillip Safe City Accord brings together 500 licensees with the council, Victoria Police, VicRoads and Liquor Licensing Victoria to provide responsible and safe premises for staff and patrons. As part of developing best practices for a safer Port Phillip, such as careful management of liquor promotions that might lead to the rapid consumption of alcohol; discouraging anti-social behaviour and drunkenness on premises; and making sure that food and a range of low and non-alcoholic beverages are available to patrons, Accord members have been developing strategies to improve pedestrian safety outside their venues by making sure that there are plenty of taxis available to take patrons home. The new taxi ranks will provide better and safer taxi services in these streets and nearby residents will benefit too, as one of the Accord aims is to encourage patrons to be quiet when they leave the premises.
