The City of Port Phillip's Sustainable Design Policy and associated Sustainable Design Strategy represent the cornerstone of out commitment to achieving a sustainable built environment that is culturally relevant, socially cohesive, economically viable and environmentally friendly.
Background
Council first adopted a draft Sustainable Design Policy in July 2002, which was finalised as the Sustainable Design Strategy in October 2003. Following its successful operation for a number of years these documents were then updated and, in October 2006, Council formally adopted the Sustainable Design Policy 2006 and the revised Sustainable Design Strategy 2006.

2008-2009 Review of Sustainable Design Policy & Strategy
When last reviewed in 2006 (expected to be reviewed every two years) the current documents were anticipated to have achieved their original purpose by 2010 and/or to have been replaced by relevant legislation by either the State or Federal Governments. Unfortunately, at this time, this expectation has not eventuated, making these documents more important than ever.
To ensure the ongoing relevance and effectiveness of the documents we are undertaking a comprehensive review of both the Sustainable Design Policy and Sustainable Design Strategy.
Objectives
To achieve a high quality outcome from this process the following matters are to be considered:
- Creation of a single document that is both clear and concise, with a background document that will be referenced into the Policy
- Creation of a document that will continue remain relevant over time
- Ensure the outcome is consistent with, and does not contradict other Council policies
- A review of the existing aims and objectives
- A review of how development within the municipality is influenced, including incentives to high performing developments
- A review of how we advocate for more sustainable design outcomes
- A review of current and potential methods to improve Council's own sustainable design performance
- A review of the existing Key Performance Indicators
Consultation
To ensure this process is open and inclusive the following stakeholders will be encouraged to participate:
- Local residents, including children
- Relevant City of Port Phillip and other local government staff
- Professionals involved with the development of our built environment (developers, architects, planners, builders, etc.)
- ESD consultants and other specialists in the field
- Representatives from the Green Building Council of Australia (of which Council is a member)
Time Frame
This process is expected to occur between September 2008 and February 2009, with the final documents expected to be put to Council as part of the March meeting cycle.
