the workshop was a hit with the young folks as were the specially catered ants on a log
keep your eyes open for more (sub)cultured in 2009!
Stencil art and sticker making
Imaginations set free, inspired concepts and design, diligent application to technique, commitment to seeing the vision through, some paint stained fingers, cold cold ears and a whole lot of beautiful intricate and haunting images reproduced as stickers and cards
Jewellery Making 08
A few brave souls ventured out on this bracing evening to learn the fine arts of earring and necklace design and construction. Strands of pearls and beads glimmered in the icy night.
Sparkly sticker photocopying workshop
Initially set to be a sparkle filled evening of t-shirt design and transfer making, things took a quick change as we realized iron-on transfers and photocopiers don't mix well!
Thanks to some fast thinking from Tobias the workshop transformed into an A4 sticker design workshop, using some of the same basic concepts of the t-shirt transfer workshop but without the mess in the photocopier!
Our three attending sticker artists designed a great selection of A4 stickers that made excellent use of glitter, textures and 3D objects which all look fantastic when colour photocopied.
The t-shirt transfer workshop will be held again in September
Zine Making:
A fun filled evening of cutting, pasting and photocopying at Emerald Hill Library.
Post modern pastiches of John Cage, Sex in the City and 20th century Architecture lead and inspired by the zine guru Esther Singer !
Duke st festival - Badgemaking and Stencil art
The Duke st festival was a lovely day of community joy. Contributing to the vibrant joy of the festival was (sub)cultured's own badgemaking and stencil art workshops. Badges poured through the badger machine at a rate of knots and the cutting only stopped for spraying at the stencil workshop. Fragments of paper were flying and paint was going everywhere - the kids were making stickers, spraying panels and creating a book of stencils too.
Mixed Media - Painting and drawing on canvas
This was a very engaging workshop with the participants making huge progress, learning a lot of art techniques and making beautiful canvasses. A lot of different mediums were used including m & ms!

Computer game making workshop
Ghosts and fluffy teddy bears flew across the screens firing exploding hamburgers into castles or presidents. The games created in this workshop were loaded with imagination, loads of comedy and tense action sequences. If you want to have a go at making a game yourself you can download Gamemaker for free from yoyogames.
Skateboarding workshop II
The skateboarding workshop was not lacking the wild energies and turmoils of youth. Amidst it all a lot of solid skating lessons were learned, tricks were nailed and good times had.
Tape art workshop
Soooo much fun!
Buff Diss led the kids in the creation of a massive tape piece that stretched from the rear of the library, in through the kids area and right through to the very front of the library.
Not even the staff were safe from their adhesive rampages.
Comic book making workshop
Dunderheads and devils engage in a devious election campaign! This workshop saw the production of a very topical comic book detailing all manner of untoward political manoeuvring on a fictional(?) election night.

Digital storytelling
In this workshop participants learnt to use imovie to create moving audio visual tributes to themselves and their favourite things (like soccer). The clips produced were constructed with love and they looked ace.
Garageband workshop
The garageband workshop was a raging success as all participants had an awesome time laying down tracks and compiling tunes using garageband software. The compositions ranged from epic freak-out rock ballads to retro jazz fusion hip hop. The musical ideas being sprouted were fascinating, mesmerising, inspiring. Hopefully a number of the participants from this workshop will bring their tunes along to the video clip production workshop in september for use as soundtracks.
Jewellery making workshop
Our second consecutive booked out workshop saw a group of excited and inspired young ladies designing and creating stunning necklaces and bracelets. Each participant left with two pieces of their own construction glinting brilliantly under the fluro lights of the Emerald Hill library.
T-shirt stencilling workshop
This workshop saw record numbers of participants take over the Emerald Hill Library both indoors and outside under the portico. Inside it was all about construction and design, cutting out stencils and blow drying freshly painted Tees. Outside, screen printing and spray painting were in constant operation. A number of participants made extra shirts for us to keep for an exhibition - someday we hope you may get to see these awesome fruits!
Manga workshop
The only sound was the scratching of pencils. The Emerald Hill library hosted its first (sub)cultured workshop on Tuesday May 15. Manga pros from Oztaku took the diligent participants through the steps involved in producing beautiful Manga figures. The characters produced were diverse and striking. It's great to see the talent that comes out of these workshops!
Skateboarding workshop
The Graham Street Skate Park in Port Melbourne was a thriving hub of hot skating action as kids of all ages shredded the ramps. Loads of other kids came along to watch the spectacle. After two hours of intense tuition, instructors Manu, Barney and Dom packed there ute and headed off. By then it was truly dark but the kids were still begging for more.
Texta magic
The squeak of felt on paper rang through the St Kilda Library on Tuesday March 6 as Arelene Texta Queen took her students through a range of drawing exercises using nothing but textas. Vibrant textacolour slashed my eyes.
Hip hop dance and DJ workshop
It was a B Girl spectacular at South Melbourne Community Centre on Sunday February 11. Break dancing, up-stepping and spinning (well almost) were mastered in an afternoon, thanks to Neda. DJ Eddie was on hand to inspire with the sweet beats and to show us how to make our own.
Stencil graffiti adventure
This thrilling adventure saw two intense days of paper slicing and spray painting. On Saturday November 4 in the St Kilda library community room, local street artists James Dodd and Yvette Bacina got the kids into a frenzy of paper stencil making. The theme decided upon was ROCK and the design idea was to make a piece that would look like a giant school kids pencil case with the names and images of their fav ROCK bands decorating it all over.
Sunday November 5 we reconvened at St Kilda junction and painted the wall. One big zipper stencil across the top and underneath was beautiful rock passion chaos.
Head down to Nelson St on the Dandenong Rd side of the Junction and take the pedestrian ramp down- its the big red wall on your left.
VJ Battle Erupts at St Kilda Library!!
On Sunday October 15 two red hot VJ teams hit the decks and turned the volume to 11. VJs Fry and VJs Gojo are the hottest new VJ teams to emerge from the (sub)cultured VJ workshop. Tutored and groomed by local pros David Campbell and Jean Poole, Fry and Gojo are no doubt "the next big thing". Keep an eye on the street press for these two!
Make your own comic workshop
Pencils and felt tips were flying as Bernard Caleo revved the crowd to complete a comic book in three short hours. Everyone came away with a stack of comics hot off the copier !
Copies will be available in the St Kilda library soon!
Make it yourself zine construction workshops
These two workshops saw participants individually building pages to be collected into a collaborative zine of their work. There was M & M artwork going on at the photocopiers, old magazines being chopped into striking collages, deconstruction of the City of Port Phillip logo and lots and lots of guillotining and paper folding. The finished product will be taking its place in the library's zine collection soon.
Songwriting
The three songwriting workshops have been a huge success. Words and music were created for three great new tunes - a gritty punk track about living in St Kilda, a hot power pop tune called 'Sour lemons' and the heart wrenching ballad, 'A Yellow song'. Demo recordings of the three songs will be sent to the participants soon!
T-shirt worship
The shears were flying during our second workshop -T-Shirt Worship with Hieu Cat. So many amazing t-shirt creations came out of this that we are holding another session, open to everyone, on Sunday 13 August from 2-5 in the St Kilda Library.
Rash
The first (sub)cultured workshop included a screening of the documentary RASH, a local film about Melbourne street art. We were fortunate to have the film introduced by the filmmaker Nicholas Hansen. Check out the library catalogue to borrow a copy of Rash. The film was followed by a workshop on stencil graffiti run by some of the artists featured in the documentary. Our participants busily slashed their way through cardboard stencils before unleashing with the spray cans.
