St Kilda Esplanade Arts & Crafts Market

The St Kilda Arts & Crafts Market was established in 1970 as an arts incubator and opportunity for the sale of arts and crafts produced by the local artists’ community.  The market occurs every Sunday and is an iconic and popular destination in Melbourne.

Seeking Expressions of Interest

The City of Port Phillip is currently seeking interested parties to participate in a new Advisory Committee for the St Kilda Esplanade Art & Craft Market. Membership of the Advisory Committee will consist of Councillors, community representatives, Esplanade Market stallholders and market industry experts. The committee provide advice on the strategic direction of the St Kilda Esplanade Market including:

  • annual review of the Esplanade Market Strategic Plan as approved by the Council, and recommend any proposed changes to the Council
  • provision of advice on implementation of the Strategic Plan directions
  • provision of advice on development of marketing and advertising strategy
  • provision of advice on communication mechanisms with stallholders, community and other stakeholders
  • provision of advice on business and operational planning.

St Kilda Esplanade Market Strategic Plan

The interim Esplanade Market Advisory Group has developed a draft 5-year Strategic Plan for the St Kilda Esplanade Market. After public consultation, and feedback from stallholders, Council approved the document at the 13 December 2010 meeting. Click here to view the plan.

Market Information

 

The St Kilda Esplanade Arts & Crafts Market has more than 150 stalls offering a variety of original art and handcrafts. The stallholders are the makers so you can find out all about the product you are purchasing from the artist who created it. Hours

10am to 5pm every Sunday of the year, except St Kilda Festival Day (2nd Sunday in February)

Applying for a stall

Market management is now accepting applications for new stallholders.
Please note that the selection committee will not be reviewing applications in December 2011. The committee will resume its monthly review schedule in January 2012.

  • This is an art and craft market and does not allow the sale of food or plants.
  • It is a makers' market for arts and crafts. Applicants must design and produce the goods for sale.
  • No products made overseas are accepted.
  • Stalls are offered on a permanent or casual basis. For information about being a casual stallholder please contact the St Kilda Market Co-ordinator on the numbers listed below.

Market management is now accepting applications for new stallholders.


Casual Stalls:  Casual stallholders can book in on a weekly basis, and must trade at least once every 6 months to keep an active status. Applications are accepted throughout the year and must be received by the 15th of the month.

Permanent Stalls: Permanent stallholders must attend the market on a regular basis throughout the year. Applications are considered every 3 months. Interviews may be scheduled with short-listed applicants. Deadlines for permanent stallholder applications are in February, May, August and November.

Received applications will be confirmed by email (preferred) or telephone. Applicants will be notified of results 3 weeks after the deadline dates.

Criteria

Selection of applicants is based on the following criteria:

  • Quality hand made products designed, produced and sold by applicant (completely or substantially, with ability to authenticate)
  • Aesthetic / artistic merit
  • Quality of product (design / technique / finish)
  • Artistic innovation, uniqueness, original design
  • Level of skill reflected in goods
  • Selection will be made to maintain a balance of media represented at the market

Other considerations:

  • Ability to present goods appropriately and well in a market context
  • Quality of presentation and packaging
  • Current trends and products with broad customer or seasonal appeal
  • Ability to sustain quality of work for stall over time (more important for permanent stallholders)
